Earth Hour observation

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The event is held annually encouraging individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 pm on a specific day towards the end of March, as a symbol of commitment to the planet.
It was started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. Since then, it has grown to engage more than 7,000 cities and towns across 187 countries and territories.
Occasionally, in years when Holy Saturday falls on the last Saturday of March, Earth Hour is moved a week early rather than its traditional date.
Earth Hour 2018 is on March 24, from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

Due to some unavoidable reasons, this rituals of OSSA was not being observed for last 8 (eight months). By the way, with effort of some leading staff, this was success.

Parliament passes bill: tax-free gratuity doubled to Rs 20 lakh
The Parliament today passed the Payment of Gratuity (Amendment) Bill which will increase the ceiling of tax-free gratuity amount to Rs 20 lakh from Rs 10 lakh. Further, this will allow the government to increase the gratuity ceiling from time to time without amending the law.
It also allows the government to fix the period of maternity leave for female employees as deemed to be in continuous service in place of the existing 12 weeks.
The amendment to the payment of gratuity law comes in the backdrop of Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act, 2017 enhancing the maximum maternity leave period to 26 weeks.
The maximum gratuity amount that is tax exempt is applicable to a person's entire career. What this means is that during your entire working life, the tax-exempted gratuity amount you can claim cannot exceed Rs 10 lakh currently in total from one or more employers. The employers can pay more than what the gratuity formula says if they feel so. The Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972 does not prevent them from doing so. The Act only prescribes the minimum limit which is exempted from tax.
Who will benefit
It appears that the proposed increase in tax-exempt gratuity limit will immediately benefit mostly those with high salaries as not many people would be earning a basic salary of over Rs 70,000 a month at present. However, if there are years to go for your retirement or you just started working, this increase will benefit most employees.
At present, formal sector workers with five or more years of service are eligible for Rs 10 lakh tax-free gratuity after leaving job or at time of superannuation. With the passage of the bill, the tax-free gratuity of Rs 20 lakh to organised sector workers will now be at par with the central government employees. After implementation of the seventh Central Pay Commission, the ceiling of gratuity amount for central government employees was increased from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh.
The Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972, was enacted to provide for gratuity payment to employees engaged in factories, mines, oilfields, plantations, ports, railway companies, shops or other establishments.
The law is applicable to employees, who have completed at least five years of continuous service in an establishment that has 10 or more persons.

SC/ST Act being used for blackmail, says Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court directs that public servants can only be arrested with the written permission of their appointing authority.
The anti-atrocities law, which protects Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes from casteist slurs and discrimination, has become an instrument to “blackmail” innocent citizens and public servants, the Supreme Court observed in a judgment on Tuesday.
Issuing a slew of guidelines to protect public servants and private employees from arbitrary arrests under the Atrocities Act, the court directed that public servants can only be arrested with the written permission of their appointing authority. In the case of private employees, the Senior Superintendent of Police concerned should allow it. Besides this precaution, a preliminary inquiry should be conducted before the FIR is registered to check whether the case falls within the parameters of the Atrocities Act and if it is frivolous or motivated.
The past three decades have seen complainants — who belong to the marginalised sections of society — use the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act of 1989 to exact “vengeance” and satisfy vested interests, a Supreme Court Bench of Justices A.K. Goel and U.U. Lalit said in their 89-page judgment. “Innocent citizens are termed accused, which is not intended by the legislature. The legislature never intended to use the Atrocities Act as an instrument to blackmail or to wreak personal vengeance,” the Supreme Court observed.

The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind presented the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri Awards today (March 20, 2018) at a Civil Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Among the dignitaries present on the occasion were the Vice President of India, Prime Minister, Speaker Lok Sabha and Union Ministers.

Two Odias, including eminent sculptor Prabhakar Maharana and master weaver Gobardhan Panika were conferred with Padma Shri awards by President Ram Nath Kovind at a special function in New Delhi on Tuesday.
The two Odias were among 84 others who received the country’s highest civilian honours in the Padma awards category. Prabhakar Maharana and Gobardhan Panika bagged the Padma awards for sculpting and weaving art respectively.
